Vote Dr. Duncan Hsu
  for Southeast Community College

Education is like every thing else in the society. The purpose of it is to help shaping a better society. For a society to work, the most important thing is to have everyone taking his share of the responsibility. The most important thing in education is to teach each citizen to be responsible

Not everyone is born equal. With all the resource we can possibly have, we can't make everyone a doctor. The best we can wish for is to have everyone reaches his or her potential. Talent is to be blessed and is not to be used for personal gain but for serving the society.

With all these being said, we need to be realistic in knowing that moral value is not a born with property for human being. Rules and regulations are to be shaped to promote the desired characteristics out of us.

My ultimate goal is to help establishing an accountable education system. In order to establish an accountable system, the clarity of the obligation of each entity is needed - be it an institution, an instructor, a student or a parent. In today's higher education environment, this is of vital importance for community colleges since today's community colleges had assuming so many obligations without proper recognition.

In an accountable system, appropriate resource should be allocated for each task assigned. Therefore, to properly fund a community college, we need to sort out tasks it takes on. By displaying these tasks in public, community colleges can make its claims and communities can justify community colleges' missions and funding.

For example, should community colleges play the role of remedial education and should the higher education system provide funding for the remedial education?

It is true that, today, almost all community colleges assumed the responsibility of providing remedial education with or without explicit authority or funding source. But, in order to establish an accountable education system, it is necessary for the public to acknowledge that the remedial education is the obligation of community colleges and the higher education system should provide the appropriate funding for it. It is, however possible that, through public debates, a community may decide that the funding should be derived from K12 systems since the responsibility is really K12's

The point I try to make is that a responisble education system can only be established by clearly defining the obligation with appropriate funding.

My task list:
  • Ultimat goal is to establish an accountable education system.
  • Publicly advocate the mission of community college

  • Job employement.
  • Promote testing out to lower students burden and hold them responsible
  • pushing toward more credits and higher awards.
  • Work with University/industry to establish a vertical industry
